Systematic Review on the Cognitive Therapeutic Approach of Board Games

Abstract
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to present the subjects, timing of research, diseases and the re-sult of cognitive therapy using board games. The results of this study will provide concrete and useful data on the application of the therapy of board games, and will provide basic data on the development and intervention, analysis of the board game for further study. Methods : This study was searched form papers published from Jan, 2005 to Aug, 2016 using KERIS, DBpia, KSI E-data based. Key words using on the search were `board game` or `cognitive` and `cognitive therapy`. Results : Eleven studies were included in this review. In all studies, internal validity of research evalu-ation was 2 and external validity of research evaluation was c in oder to small number of study groups. Among the 11 subjects, seven were for young child and children, and four were for schizophrenic patients, mild dementia patients, and adults with mental retardation. The effects of board games in each study are summarized as follows. 1. Improved cognitive function 2. Improved Execution function 3. Increased attention 4. Improved working memory 5. Improved Communication Skill 6. Increased ADL skills 7. Increased the self-realization 8. Enhanced psychological station 9. Increased self rule 10. Improved self-expression 11. Improved social problem-solving ability and vision capacity 12. Positive effects on self-control 13. Decreased impulsive response. Conclusion : In this study, it was shown that board games have various effects such as improvement of daily life activities, improvement of self - actualization, strengthening of psychological com-petence, and improvement of social problem solving ability as well as cognitive function. Based on the results of this study, further study should be conducted to verify the effective-ness of detailed cognitive function through board game intervention and to analyze more sys-tematically applicable board game according to cognitive level.
